Seventh seat remains vacant

NORWICH – Two weeks after the unexpected resignation of Board Vice President Tim Brown, the seventh seat on the Norwich City School Board of Education remains vacant. Wednesday night, members of the school board discussed options for filling the position and have determined that they will appoint a replacement on June 2.
This will allow for the new board member to receive orientation and be up to speed in time for the district’s reorganizational meeting in July, according to Board President Bob Patterson.
“I’m looking to fill the seat as soon as possible,” Patterson told his fellow board members at last night’s meeting.
The board is required by state education law to fill the vacancy within 60 days. There are technically three options for filling the spot: the board can hold a special election, appoint someone to the position or allow the BOCES superintendent make the appointment.
“I think we need to decide as a board how to fill the spot,” said Board Member Joe Stagliano. The district does not have the 45 days required to provide notice of a special election, nor do they wish to wait for the BOCES superintendent to intervene.
While Patterson said he had come to the meeting “prepared to take decisive action and fill the seat,” Stagliano and the other members of the board felt it was important to open the process up to the community.
“I think we need to let the public know what our game plan is before making that final decision,” explained Stagliano, who said he was aware of at least one person interested in serving on the board who had already come forward.
Board Member Priscilla Johnson agreed with Stagliano that community members should be informed that the board was seeking to fill the seat by appointment and that anyone interested in serving should be encouraged to come forward.
“The fourth individual is also a possibility,” reminded Johnson, referring to the fourth, and unsuccessful, candidate in Tuesday’s election, Mark Hollifield.
After further discussion, the board decided they would seek to fill the vacancy at the next scheduled meeting.
“Any interested people should contact the district office,” Patterson said. Potential candidates are asked to submit a letter of interest which should include their qualifications and why they are interested in becoming a member of the school board. Only those who submit the requested information by Wednesday, May 27 will be considered, so that board members will have ample time to review the candidates prior to the June 2 meeting where they intend to make their decision.
The next scheduled meeting will take place at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 2 in the District Board Room.
