City disposes of surplus property, equipment

NORWICH – Spring is in the air, and the City of Norwich is cleaning house by disposing of several pieces of surplus property and equipment.
On Tuesday night, the Norwich Common Council authorized the sale of properties at 49 Front St., 18 Hickory St. and 3 State St.
The city accepted an offer from New York State Electric and Gas for a portion of the property located at 49 Front St. NYSEG offered the city $15,000 for the parcel. NYSEG will also be granted a gas pipeline easement through the city’s remaining portion of the property.
The NYSEG offer has been on the table for about a month and a resolution authorizing the sale of the property was initially tabled so that it could be amended by the city attorney. Mayor Joseph Maiurano commended the council for their cooperation and work on the sale, saying, “This resolution is an example of the working together to ensure agreements are handled appropriately.”
The properties located at 18 Hickory and 3 State streets were put on the table at a tax auction held April 24. Upon the recommendation of the Finance/Personnel Committee, 18 Hickory was sold to Jeff Thornton for $11,000 and 3 State was sold to Anthony Grippaldi for $4,100.
Mayor Maiurano pointed out that the sale of the State Street property will allow for the continued renovations of that piece of property, “which has been in disarray for a number of years,” Maiurano said. “I want to thank the owner for starting to fix that up.”
In addition to the three properties, the city also declared some equipment to be surplus and authorized it for sale. The council declared a 1988 Hahn Pumper Fire apparatus to be surplus equipment. The truck can now be disposed of as the department sees fit.
At the May meeting of the Finance/Personnel Committee, Fire Chief Tracy Chawgo told the committee that the department has begun selling 50 old fire alarm boxes. The boxes were being sold on an online auction site and could bring in as much as $150 each. The department was also planning on listing a surplus ambulance on the auction site.
