Youth Bureau announces summer programs
NORWICH – The City of Norwich Youth Bureau has announced some of the programs it will be holding this summer.
All of the programs are open to youth in the City of Norwich, Towns of Norwich, North Norwich, Preston, Plymouth and Pharsalia free of charge. Youth from other areas can register for the programs by paying a fee. Registration for most programs will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 3 at the Youth Bureau Office.
• Swimming Lessons - Open to youth ages 5 to 20, the swimming lessons program will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Monday through Friday at the Norwich High School Pool. Infant swim instruction is also available starting at age 6 months, but parents must accompany the infant in the water for the 30 minute class, which begins daily at 9:30 a.m. The swimming lessons program will include two sessions. The first session will run from Monday, June 29 through Friday, July 17. The second session will run from Monday, July 20 through Friday, Aug. 7.
• Competitive Swim Team - Open to youth 8 years and up, practices will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the High School Pool. The program will run from June 29 through Aug. 7. A schedule of swim meet times has not yet been announced.
• Playground - For children ages 5 to 9, playground time will be available from noon to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday from June 29 through Aug. 7. Two sites are available, the Perry Browne School Playground and the Gibson School Playground. Each site is limited to 30 children. Playground groups will be visiting the Norwich Kids’ Kingdom, located on Lee Avenue, one day each week. A representative from Kids’ Kingdom will be at registration night with more information.
• Soccer - Open to children in kindergarten through fourth grade, soccer is a six week program that runs from June 29 through Aug. 7. Children will be separated by grade level. Two teams will participate at the kindergarten to first grade level and two at the second through fourth grade level. The younger group in program one will practice from 6 to 7 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays. Those in program two will practice from 6 to 7 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The teams will come together from 6 to 7 on Fridays to play games. The older group in program three will practice from 7 to 8 on Mondays and Wednesday. Those in program four will practice from 7 to 8 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and the older children will play games from 7 to 8 p.m. on Fridays.
• Tennis - Children 8 and up can sign up for tennis at the beginner, intermediate or advanced level. Beginners will practice from 9 to 9:45, intermediate from 10 to 10:45 and advanced from 11 to 11:45 Monday through Friday at the High School Tennis Courts.
• Borden Avenue Skating Facility - Open all summer, the skating park is unattended. Children can skate at their own risk. Protective equipment is required at all times.
• Summer Educational and Fun Trips - Bus trips are scheduled to “Steamtown” in Scranton, Penn. and to the Colgate University Visualization Lab, an IMAX style theater and planetarium, and Stone Quarry Hill Art Park. Trips are free, however a $5 deposit is required. The amount will sbe refunded the day of the trip.
