County’s policital scene heating up

CHENANGO COUNTY – The political scene in Chenango County is heating up early as several longtime politicians have announced that they will be stepping away from public office.
In addition to Sheriff Thomas Loughren’s resignation, effective June 8, the following officials have confirmed that they will not be running in the November elections: Alton B. Doyle, supervisor of the Town of Guilford; Harry W. Conley, supervisor of the Town of Sherburne; Town of Sherburne Councilman Sherman Record; Town of Sherburne Clerk John McDaniel; Town of Sherburne Justice Francis Faulkner; Town of Afton Highway Superintendent William Latham and Town of Afton Clerk Shirley A. Haynes.
Longtime Afton Supervisor Robert Briggs, who is 78, said he would run again only because the town is losing two officials already. “I didn’t intend to run, but I just don’t feel very comfortable walking away with three new people here,” Briggs said.
June 9 is the first day candidates for office in New York may begin circulating their petitions. Undersheriff Ernie Cutting, a Republican, has announced his decision to run for sheriff.
Chenango County Republican Party Chairman Thomas Morrone has scheduled a meeting of party affiliates on June 8 to endorse Cutting as well as William Craine of Sherburne for supervisor, George Seneck of Guilford for supervisor, and all of the current Republican incumbents.
If there were more than one Republican candidate for the position of sheriff, Morrone said there would be time for a primary before November.
Chenango County Democratic Party Chairman Patrick McNeil said there was “a distinct possibility” that his party would also endorse a candidate for sheriff. He said it would be within the best interest of Democrats countywide if the committee recommended party affiliates for open positions on the town level.
Outgoing Doyle and Conley, who are both Republicans, leave two positions open on the county’s powerful Finance Committee. Chairman of the Board of Supervisors Richard B. Decker makes committee membership and leadership appointments in January of each year.
McDaniel is the longest serving town clerk in New York. He has been Town of Sherburne Clerk for 66 years.
“It’ll start all brand new,” he said about his town’s government next year. “There’s a lot going on in the town; a lot of little problems, construction and a lot of work just keeping everything going.”
