Up, up in the skies ... it’s Chenango County Airport Day on Saturday
NORTH NORWICH – Chenango County will be looking up this Saturday as vintage, military, jet and commercial aircraft take to the skies as part of the 19th annual Airport Days at Lt. Warren E. Eaton Airport.
The event has morphed from an aviation showcase into an aviation showplace with static displays, aircraft demonstrations and rides plus - new this year - the onsite participation of about 30 community and public service agencies.
The day starts early, at 7 a.m., with breakfast provided by a team from the Boy Scouts of America and the arrival of aircraft and other general aviation. According to the airport’s general manager, Jamie Baciuska of Gama Aviation, Inc., jets on display will include a Citation II Corporate jet, a de Havilland Vampire, a BAC Strikemaster, a Fouga Jet, and two Casa jet aircraft.
The Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 1204 will have at least three aircraft providing free rides for children under the age of 18. Registration for the Young Eagles flights begins at 8 a.m. Participants must have a parent or legal guardian with them to complete the paperwork.
The Wings of Eagles Museum in Elmira is sending a WWII trainer, the AT-6 Texan, and a Stearman open cockpit aircraft. These two aircraft will be providing rides by purchase for the general public. Flight Instructor Fred Stagnaro of the Norwich Flight School will also provide rides by purchase on his Warrior.
All flights, free or purchased, will run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
By 9 a.m., the community’s public safety and service organizations will be in place. Meet and learn about all those agencies, public and private, that improve the quality of life in Chenango County.
Some highlights are: the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office with their new airboat and evidence trailer; Norwich City Police and Greene Police who will display and demonstrate enforcement technology; Greene Police and the DEC Environmental Police who will be doing K-9 demonstrations with their dogs; and Norwich Fire Department fire fighting and emergency medical services demonstrations.
The Chenango County Fire Coordinator Matt Beckwith will be providing the new Mobile Command Trailer and support vehicle. This is an essential tool used during area wide disasters. The New York State Police will also be participating with the “Persuader.” The South Central Group of the Civil Air Patrol, the group was responsible for finding a helicopter that was lost locally, will also be on hand.
“These are the hidden treasures of Chenango County. These organizations donate thousands of volunteer hours and provide services to all segments of our communities. Come and see those groups that make our quality of life better in this wonderful Chenango County,” said Robert H. Benton Jr., Airport Day co-coordinator and owner/operator of TASIS.
TASIS Communications Group, GAMA Aviation, and the Frontier Communications Community Action Team are sponsors of Airport Day.
Admission if free, but there is a $1 per car donation for on-site parking. For more details and to pre-purchase rides, e-mail airport@tasis.org or call the airport administrator at 337-1498.
