Accused teen burglars charged as adults

OXFORD – The Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested five teenagers Wednesday and charged them with felony burglary after the group allegedly forced their way into the home of a Town of Preston couple, to steal a few hundred dollars in cash.
A joint investigation by Sheriff’s deputies and the Village of Oxford Police Department resulted in the arrest of five local teens.
• David I. Dunagan, 17, Oxford
• Zachary T. Hathaway, 19, McDonough
• Lacey J. Brazee, 17, McDonough
• Joseph N. Whaley, 17, Oxford
• Jeffrey M. Sabines, 18, McDonough
All five were charged as adults with second degree burglary, a class C felony that could carry a maximum sentence of up to seven years in New York State prison if convicted.
Sheriff investigators said Friday that each of the teens had made statements of admission to the break-in.
All five were arraigned in Town of Oxford Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility in lieu of $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 property bond. They are scheduled to appear in the Town of Preston Court on Tuesday.
Sheriff's deputies said that the alleged victims in the case were a couple living along Sawmill Hill Road whose teenage daughter was known to the defendants.
Police also said the teens forced their way into the home through the front door and stole a few hundred dollars in cash.
