OXFORD – Oxford Middle School Principal Kathleen Hansen made a trip to Teasers Salon in Norwich yesterday to have her dark tresses dyed purple. Her new hair color was part of a bargain she struck with her school’s fifth and sixth graders last fall: If each of the two grades could read a 1,000 books by the end of the school year, she’d dye her hair purple just like the title character in the book, ‘Miss Malarkey Leaves No Reader Behind.’ When the number of books read was tallied, the fifth grade had read a total of 1,052 books and sixth grade 1,075. Hansen was accompanied to Teasers by fifth Grade Teacher Leslie Koopman and top readers from both grades: Kevin Davis, Gabby Corzzitorto, Kassidy Hodge, Aaron Mosner, James Squier and Emily Howard. Teasers Hairstylist Penny Brown did the honors. To commemorate the occasion, Hansen was presented with a book written by Mrs. Koopman and illustrated by Tiia Aarisma which was signed by students in both grades.
