Two board members continue to push to fill seat

NORWICH – Despite their previous agreement to hold off until the district’s re-organizational meeting on July 1, two members of the Norwich City School Board pushed again last week to appoint someone to fill the board’s vacant seventh seat.

“I can’t help but think that we should take care of it now ... and not push it off any longer,” said Board Member Priscilla Johnson on June 16 after making a motion to appoint Norwich resident Kim Mack to fill the vacancy. She had made the same motion at the board’s June 2 meeting and was, on both occasions, quickly seconded by Sally Chirlin.

“There is no reason to delay it,” Johnson said, explaining her action. “I think it would be rather healthy for the community to seat a person at this time.”

Board President Bob Patterson made it clear he was not in support of the motion, as the topic did not appear on the meeting’s agenda and the board had reached consensus at the last meeting to hold the appointment until Perry Owen resumed his place on the board.
