Greene man charged for child pornography
GREENE – In a joint investigation, the Greene Police Department and the New York State Troopers Computer Crimes Unit raided a home in the village and seized a man suspected of trafficking in child pornography.
Police executed a search warrant at the residence of John M. Gavazzi, 46, of 21 south Chenango St. Thursday morning and charged him with possessing a sexual performance by a child and promoting a sexual performance of a child, both felonies.
Officers seized several pieces of digital media, including Gavazzi’s computer, disks and camera.
Greene Police Chief Steven Dutcher said the investigation took months and he credited the technical arm of the state police as being instrumental in the operation.
Dutcher explained that often predators go to great lengths to conceal their online activities and were very computer savvy. He said the material was often exchanged with other men who form loose groups online for the sole purpose of sharing the underage pornography.
Dutcher said he was encouraging agency cooperation with other branches of law enforcement and wanted to actively seek out those who were trafficking the material over the Internet.
This is not the first time Ducther and his department have worked with another agency in making such an arrest. Last November, working with the state police, the department arrested James O’Brian, 43, of Greene for nearly identical charges. He later pleaded guilty to possessing a sexual performance of a child less than 16, in supreme court and was sentenced to 10 years in state prison.
In December, the Greene PD and the Federal Bureau of Investigations arrested Charles A. Robbins, 50, of North Chenango Street in Greene for possession of child pornography and incest, both felonies. He was later indicted on federal charges and is preparing to appear in federal court over the allegations. Federal agents allegedly tracked the transfer of child pornography from an Italian distributor to his computer.
“Honesty there’s probably one of these guys in every town. Hopefully it’ll only be a matter of time and technology before they get caught. If all these arrests do is scare other predators from trying to commit these crimes in our community then that’s a start,” Dutcher said.
Gavazzi was arraigned in Village of Greene Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $50,000 bail.
