Two nabbed in city drug bust
NORWICH – The City of Norwich Police Department, with the aid of New York State Division of Parole, searched the home of a parolee Tuesday morning, discovering crack cocaine stuffed in a mattress along with several other illegal drugs.
After searching his residence at 9:13 a.m. Tuesday, police charged 28-year-old Kevin J. Dunmire of 29 Court St., Apartment 1B, Norwich, with third degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a B class felony, for allegedly having seven packages of individually wrapped crack cocaine hidden inside his mattress. He was also charged with fourth degree criminal possession of controlled substance, a C class felony, for allegedly having possession of 7.1 grams of psychedelic mushrooms. Dunmire was charged with seventh degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor for allegedly having several smaller quantities of other illicit substances, including six ecstasy pills, powdered cocaine in a shirt pocket and prescription anxiety medication, Alprazolam. Dunmire was also charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation.
Living at the apartment with Dunmire was 25-year-year-old Heather M. Bradley, who was also charged with the top felony of third degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, along with seventh degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of marijuana.
“This search was conducted under the auspices of the fact that Dunmire is a convicted felon in parole status for a prior conviction on a charge of attempted first degree burglary,” reported Norwich Police Chief Joseph Angelino.
Under the guidelines for parolees in New York State, the Division of Parole can search the residence of convicted felon without a warrant. The city police were called in to aid the agency in the search.
“Officers located several controlled substances in various quantities, paraphernalia for the use and distribution of illegal substances and other items of contraband, including several hundred dollars in U.S. currency,” said Angelino.
Both defendants appeared in Norwich City Court Tuesday evening before City Court Judge James Downey and were remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $20,000 bail. Dunmire and Bradley will appear back in Norwich City Court at 1:30 p.m. July 7 for their felony hearing.
