'Plein Aire' Thursdays coming to a park near you
NORWICH – Plein Aire Thursdays Artist Group has expanded the number of sessions this year and added new locations to add some variety to the event.
“The increased number of sessions and the variety of locations allows the public an even greater opportunity to watch an artist at work,” says Charlene Walling, a board member of Colorscape Chenango Arts Festival, who in combination with Golden Artist Colors, organized the event as part of a fundraiser for Colorscape.
What is Plein Aire? It’s a French expression which means “in the open air,” and is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors. And that’s exactly what’s taking place every Thursday (and a few Saturdays) from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm throughout the month of July.
Plein Aire is free and open to the public. The schedule is as follows:
July 2: Hamilton Center Park
July 9: Bailey Island on the Unadilla River.
July 11: Homestead Farm Supply, Railroad Avenue, New Berlin.
July 16: Bailey Island on the Unadilla River
July 23: East Park Gazebo, downtown Norwich
July 25: Millbrook Park
Aug. 6: East Park Gazebo, downtown Norwich
Plein Aire Thursdays culminates on Thursday, Aug. 13, during an open reception and auction at Golden Artist Colors. The public will have the opportunity to bid on work produced during the Plein Aire sessions, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Colorscape Chenango Arts Festival.
Plein Aire Thursdays brings together local and professional artists in an open air setting to create original pieces of work.
“This is a rare opportunity to watch an artist at work,” says Walling. “Whether you’re an artist that wants to participate, or someone who just appreciates the creative process, you’ll find Plein Aire Thursdays inspirational and enjoyable.”
Colorscape Chenango Arts Festival is a free festival of art and music in an interactive atmosphere featuring over 90 juried artists and demonstrations, arts activities for all ages, a competitive poetry slam, and creative food vending. The 15th Annual Colorscape Chenango Arts Festival takes place Saturday and Sunday, September 12 and 13 in downtown Norwich.
