Reduced admission, family fun at the120th Afton Fair
AFTON – The 120th Afton Fair will take place from Wednesday, July 8 through Sunday, July 12. Our reduced admission is $3 for age 12 and over and free for age 11 and under. All grandstand and 88 BC/Afton Sertoma Stage Entertainment is free with paid gate admission. There will be a wide variety of animal displays and contests as well as entertainment for the entire family to enjoy.
The Midway and vendors will open at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. There will be wristband specials for the young and young at heart every day. There will be $15 wristband specials on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. and at 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. New this year is a Saturday Super Saver Special. This $20 wristband is good on Saturday only from 1 to 10 p.m. The midway is provided by Main Events Amusements.
The entertainment line up at the 88 BC/Afton Sertoma Stage is diverse and everyone is sure to find something they like. Skyline with Cassidy Lynn is back from Nashville for the summer and will perform at 8 p.m. on Saturday night. Panhandle, a country band from Oxford with a recently released CD will perform on Wednesday night. There will be fireworks at 10 p.m. both nights. On Friday night at 7:30, local band Familiar Noise will return to the Afton Fair and will perform music from their CD, “Simpler Times” released in 2008 as well as music from a CD they are currently working on. There will be an accompanying live remote by WKGB FM from 7 to 9 p.m. The Southerntiersmen Barbershop Chorus and Quartets will perform on Saturday afternoon at 4. The Southerntiersmen are the award winning Binghamton Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, the largest all male singing fraternity in the world. Other musical performances include the Binghamton High School Steel Drum Band, The Old Time Band, Deuces Wild, Route 66 as well as dance performances by The Blue Ribbon Cloggers and Line Dancing with Mindy.
Other events at the 88 BC/Afton Sertoma Stage include the Miss Afton Fair Pageant with categories for newborns up to 18 years of age and the Afton Fair Junior Idol contest for children and teens who want to compete in a singing contest. On Sunday, Ronald McDonald will be at the spectator’s tent by the stage to meet and greet children from 1 to 3 p.m.
Grandstand Events include the annual Firemen’s Parade and Games on Wednesday night and Harness Racing with special activities for children Thursday at 1 p.m. JD Winslow Equestrian Entertainment featuring Roman Riding and freestyle vaulting with draft horses will perform at 7 p.m. on Thursday, 4 p.m. on Friday and at 4 and 7 p.m. on Saturday. Racing by Afton Motor Speedway will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday night. Saturday brings the Pony Pull at the grandstand. The Catskill Garden Tractor Pullers and TOYS antique tractor pullers will be in front of the grandstand at 9 a.m. on Sunday and we will finish off the week at the grandstand with the Demolition Derby at 3 p.m.
There are other notable events, displays and activities taking place during the fair. The Open English and Western Horse Show will take place on Saturday and the Open Miniature, Driving and Senior Games Show on Sunday at the Horse Show Ring. The Youth Dairy Show will start on Wednesday at 9 a.m. and finish up in the afternoon on Thursday in the cattle barn area. The Children’s Activity Center will be open daily at noon with fun, games and activities for children. The Floral Hall Judging begins at 11 a.m. on Thursday under the Grandstands. Bear Ridge Chainsaw Carvings returns and will be located near the vendor area. There will be a Bikes-for-Kids Giveaway with one boy’s and one girl’s bike, each with helmets, being given away each day. Mr. Scribbles will be on the grounds on Friday, Saturday and Sunday turning scribbles into works of art. Finally there will be various animal displays and Shows.
