Six hospitalized following Sunday crash
NORWICH – Five adults and one child were injured Sunday in a two-car collision which closed State Rt. 12 between Wal-Mart/Lower Ravine Road and the Halfway House Bridge for nearly an hour as emergency crews worked to free occupants from the wreckage.
New York State Police investigators at the scene said their initial findings indicated that a Blue 2009 Toyota Camry was traveling north along Rt. 12 at around 3:15 p.m. when, for unknown reasons, it veered to the right, drifting across the shoulder and striking the side of a stopped black Buick LeSabre as it prepared to exit the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ Kingdom Hall parking lot.
Emergency crews at the scene said the three occupants in the LeSabre suffered serious injuries.
The driver of the LeSabre, Brian Conant, 41, of Norwich, was airlifted to Wilson Regional Medical Center in Binghamton in “grave condition,” by the Guthrie helicopter, crews reported. The other two passengers in that vehicle, 49-year old Teresa Conant and 67-year old Iris Delgado, also of Norwich, were rushed to Wilson by ambulance with “serious injuries” police said.
As of 9 p.m. last night, Brian Conant’s condition was listed as “very critical,” reported New York State Police Sergeant Elizabeth Wonka. His wife was in critical but stable condition at that time and Delgado in serious condition.
The driver and two passengers in the Camry did not sustain serious or life-threatening injuries during the crash, according to Wonka.
The driver of the Camry, who was identified as Clifford G. Williams, 73, of Ilion, was transported by ambulance to Chenango Memorial Hospital for treatment and observation along with 36-year old Jason E. Williams, a passenger in the vehicle, Wonka said. The Camry’s third passenger, 7-year old Zachary Williams, was also transported to Chenango Memorial before being transferred to Upstate Medical’s pediatric unit for observation.
According to Wonka, the Williams were traveling through Chenango County at the time of the accident. There were no skid marks evident at the scene, she said, and it is believed that the Camry was traveling at a “normal rate of speed” when it struck the LeSabre, which was stationary and off the roadway at the time of the crash.
The accident remains under investigation, according to Wonka. No tickets have been issued as of press time.
State Police were assisted at the scene by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Department, the Norwich Fire Department, Oxford Volunteer Fire Department, Cooperstown Medical Transport and Guthrie Air responded to the scene. The Sherburne Fire Department was put on standby to cover the Norwich area during the response.
