Sherburne celebrates Heritage Day

SHERBURNE – The Sherburne Historic Park Society will celebrate the town’s heritage during their annual Heritage Day event on Friday and Saturday.
The event will officially begin at 5 p.m. on Friday. Civil War reenactors will kick off the event by laying a wreath at the Civil War Monument in downtown Sherburne. The soldiers will then fire a salute to Sherburne’s Civil War soldiers.
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, the town will present its Heritage Day event in Sherburne’s Historic Park, located on School Street in Sherburne. The event will include a Civil War enactment, featuring soldiers from the 61st Regiment. The soldiers, who also appeared at the event last year, are fully costumed and show spectators what life was like in a Civil War Camp.
In addition to the reenactors, Eileen Patch of Endwell will return to Sherburne this year for her presentation “Voices From the Civil War: A Living History.” Patch will share excerpts from 59 actual letters written from a Civil War soldier to his mother. Patch inherited the letters, which were originally addressed to her great-grandmother Sarah Englis. She transcribed, researched and annotated the letters and published them in a book titled “Letters from George.”
The remainder of the day’s events will include music, a bake sale, displays in Sherburne’s Log Cabin and a quilt exhibit. The Log Cabin was dedicated during last year’s Heritage Day event. Donated by Jim Webb, the cabin was dedicated in honor of Webb’s son Josh, who passed away in 1998.
A class will be given in the town’s one room school house, and local vendors will sell crafts, collectibles, soaps and more. “Please stop in anytime to see what Sherburne’s Historic Park is all about,” said Historic Park Society Member Jenni Larchar.
