Afton motorcyclist leads police on high speed chase

AFTON – An Afton motorcyclist who led Chenango County Sheriff deputies on a high speed chase in excess of 100 miles an hour, believed he evaded the police until he returned to his home and found officers waiting for him.
Monday evening, at around 5 p.m., a sheriff’s deputy on routine patrol passed a speeding motorcycle along State Highway 7 in the Town of Afton. The bike was traveling at such a high rate of speed that the officer immediately turned on his lights and spun the cruiser around to begin pursuit.
The operator of the motorcycle, 24-year-old Bryan S. Terpstra of Afton, allegedly decided to flee from the chasing officer by racing down the road in speeds in excess of a 100 miles an hour.
The short pursuit lasted only for a few miles after the deputy made a visual identification of Terpstra’s license plate.
“Typically we won’t pursue the vehicle at that point, not for a vehicle and traffic violation. Obviously if this individual had committed a criminal offense it would have been a different story,” said Sheriff’s Lt. James Lloyd.
Lloyd said the officers then travel to Terpstra’s residence in Afton where they waited for him.
“He thought he had actually gotten away, but when he pulled up he saw the patrol cars in his driveway. At that point he got off his bike and approached the officer basically saying, ‘You got me,’ and was arrested,” said Lloyd.
Terpstra was arraigned in Town of Afton Court, charged with reckless driving, unlawfully fleeing a police officer and several other vehicle and traffic offenses and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $5,000 bail.
“Once we know where they’re going, it’s over. How fast someone is going isn’t really a factor in them getting away anymore,” said Lloyd.
