Bricks and Mortar Report
EDITOR’S NOTE: The Bricks & Mortar Report provides updates on major construction projects in Chenango County.
Brown Avenue Housing project:
• Contractors installed electrical and gas services last week for this low-income housing complex under the direction of the City of Norwich housing department.
• The exterior is completely finished on the single family unit.
• Appliances, cabinetry and carpets are ready to be installed.
• The estimated end date is early August.
• The Brown Avenue housing project began in 1999 as a program to provide home ownership opportunities for moderate income seniors.
• The original plans call for the construction of six duplex units, or 12 housing units. Each will be approximately 1,100 square feet.
• The bid for construction of one duplex structure was awarded to Richard Wakeman, a Sidney-based contractor, last March. The cost of construction was estimated at $283,300 or $141,650 per unit.
• The Norwich Housing Authority is overseeing the project, led by NHA Director Judy Wingate-Wade. According to Wingate-Wade, they will use the funds from the sale of the first units to build the next.
Delaware Chenango Madison Otsego (DCMO) BOCES:
• Contractors continue building interior spaces within the expanded BOCES school on state Rt. 23 in Norwich. The following is scheduled to be completed by the end of August: a 2,400 square foot kitchen and bakery to serve both the culinary arts program and the school’s lunch program; a 700 square foot human services classroom with small kitchenette; a 400 square feet three-room nurse’s suite; and two adjacent 180 square foot speech offices.
• Hallways will be cut into the outside of the new gymnasium.
• The work completes the fifth and final phase of the approximately $48 million project that was begun in 2008 for the Norwich and Sidney Center BOCES campuses.
• An open house will be held Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 followed by week-long celebrations beginning Saturday, Oct. 3.
