Oxford falls in Pony League semifinals; Sherburne advances

ONEONTA – Oxford’s Otsenango Pony League postseason tournament run was halted in the semifinals by an unbeaten Oneonta U14 squad Saturday afternoon at Neawha Park.
Oneonta jumped out to a double-digit lead, and pounded out 15 hits in a 19-11 victory.
“Oneonta is a very young team, but you wouldn’t have guess by the way they played,” said Oxford coach Jim Champlin, whose team finished the season with a 10-2 record. “They have a very polished bunch of baseball players.”
Oxford scored 10 of its 11 runs over the final three innings to close Oneonta’s wide margin. Andrew Golden had three hits – including a double – finishing with three RBI for Oxford. Adam Pierson scored three times from his lead-off spot.
"From when we started the season in late June this team has grown mightily as baseball players and young men,” Champlin said, who added special thanks to Judy Moore and the Oxford parents.
Oxford won its first-round playoff game on Thursday defeating Morris, 22-12.
Down 12-5 after three innings, Nathan Head came on to pitch three shutout innings of relief for the win. Justin Schray had three RBI and five runs scored in the victory. Golden, Matt Moore, and Shawn McKee added two hits apiece as Oxford finished with a season-best 12 hits. “Nathan came in to pitch and righted the ship,” Champlin said. “He was definitely the hero in this game.”
Sherburne 8, Middleburg 7 (10 innings)
ONEONTA – Sherburne loaded the bases in the 10th inning without a basehit, and after a force out on a fielder’s choice, scored the winning run on a bases-loaded hit batsmen to advance to the finals of the Otsenango Pony League tournament.
Michael Wilson pitched three innings of scoreless relief for the victory striking out five and walking none. Sherburne will play Oneonta U14 in the finals on Tuesday at a place yet to be determined.
