New Berlin Youth Days plans in full swing

NEW BERLIN – In anticipation of New Berlin’s 48th annual Youth Day Celebration Aug. 27-30, one of its sponsors, NBT Bank, is offering presale wrist band at the New Berlin branch.
The bank is also taking nominations for New Berlin 2009 Citizen and Youth of the Year at the site. The wrist bands will be good for the midway rides Saturday afternoon Aug. 29 following the Youth Days parade, sponsored by New York Central Mutual Insurance and the Gates-Cole Insurance Agency.
“We’re asking everybody to buy one even if they don’t use it. All of the proceeds will go to Youth Days,” said committee member Brian Burton.
The presale $12 wristbands will cost $15 if purchased on the days of the event and individual tickets for rides cost $3 a piece.
“A lot of the kids that come can’t always afford to go other places. We want to draw in families no matter what their economics are. Everyone needs to be a kid. Also that weekend there are usually a number of class reunions and other events get scheduled. It’s a weekend when there are a number of people coming home to the area,” said New Berlin Youth Days Committee President Larissa Hanslmaier.
Staying true to making the event for all kids, Burton, who is also the New Berlin NBT branch manager, said the bank along with the Preferred Mutual Insurance Company and New York Pizzeria are sponsoring free midway rides from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 28.
Then again for the final four hours of the event from noon to 4 p.m. that Sunday, free rides will be courtesy Preferred Mutual, NBT, and the churches of Saint Andrews and St. Matthew’s, in New Berlin.
The festivities take place all through the weekend on the grounds of Milford Academy in downtown New Berlin along South Main Street.
Beginning this weekend on Saturday, Aug. 8, the Youth Days Golf tournament sponsored Golden Artist Colors and Preferred Mutual will be held at the River Bank Golf Course, for ages four to 17. The matches are free of charge and all children and teens are invited to attend.
On Thursday, Aug. 27, Youth Days kicks off at 6 p.m. in the Unadilla Valley High School auditorium with the Miss Youth Days Pageant and presentations of the ‘Youth of the Year’ and ‘Citizen of the Year’ awards.
Friday marks the opening of the main attractions, including the food booths and midway rides.
After the parade Saturday, fireworks will commence at dark, also sponsored by NY Central and Gates-Cole.
On Sunday, patrons are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to the carnival. Those who do will become eligible to register for a child’s bike drawing at 4 p.m. All the donated food will go to the Unadilla Valley Food Pantry, which is organized by several area churches.
Also commencing at 10 a.m. Sunday is the New Berlin Fire Department’s firematics competition.
The Chenango County Fire Convention will be taking place the weekend before and during Youth Days. The two events have been working together to help increase their exposure to the public.
All proceeds for Youth Days go directly to benefiting the participating youth groups within Chenango County. Groups wanting to receive some of the proceeds need to volunteer their time to make Youth Days possible. Last year about $3,000 was handed out to local charities following the event.
