Test your strength at Habitat’s “Skillet Toss”

NORWICH – The Chenango County Habitat for Humanity (CCHH) will be participating at the Chenango County Fair with a new fund raising sport. On Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. and Saturday form 3 to 5 p.m. you can play the CCHH “Skillet Toss.” If you’ve got a strong arm, the “Skillet Toss” might be fun for you! The game simply involves throwing a hefty steel skillet for distance. Are you up for the challenge?
The first day at the County Fair, Thursday, will be open for people who just want to flex their muscles and give it a try. The top skillet athletes, however, will be invited back “into the frying pan” Saturday to toss the heavy utensil in an attempt to mark a farther distance than his or her competitors.
The “Skillet Toss” skillet is a specially fabricated and weighted steel skillet made especially for the game. (Cast iron skillets tend to break and the weight isn’t as consistent.) Traditionally the game is played by women only, however, since it is new to the area, the CCHH decided to open it up to both sexes. That’s just what they did this past June when they introduced the “Skillet Toss” at Dairy Day.
At Dairy Day the “Skillet Toss” was played by men, boys, women and girls of all ages. Fifty-one people in all participated, and the public response was very favorable. Although the “Skillet Toss” was intended only as a demonstration, it turned into a distance competition. With that experience, the CCHH now has a successful fund raising sport on their hands!.
Different techniques and the steel skillet’s aerodynamic behavior are involved in the resulting tossing distance. The frying pan sometimes goes flying through the air in a graceful arch and, at other times it’s more of an erratic end-over-end tumble. What ever your style, all players will have fun and a few top tossers will receive a County Fair ribbon for best in place.
Also on Saturday will be a drawing for the CCHH Quilt made by the Chenango Piecemakers following the Skillet Toss. You can still buy quilt raffle tickets from any CCHH member, purchase them by mail, or buy them at the Habitat booth.
Chenango County Habitat is very grateful to its four sponsors, Kuntriset Kitchens & Baths Design Center, Faber’s Home and Kitchens, Hoppie’s and Nina’s Pizzeria.
Watch for the sign of the “pan” and “pump a little iron” to train for this worthy fund raiser.
