Chenango and Broome fire crews fight blaze at county line

HARPURSVILLE – Fire departments from Chenango and Broome counties responded to a two-story house fire near the county line on Tuesday.
The Harpursville Fire Department, with mutual aid from Coventry and Afton, responded to a house fire at 2:20 p.m. yesterday at 469 Davey Rd., less than half a mile from the Coventry and Harpursville town borders.
Chenango County Fire Coordinator Matthew L. Beckwith said no one was injured in the fire that later forced a family of five living at the residence to more in with area relatives.
Crews at the scene said significant smoke and fire damage was done to the rear side of the home’s second floor, and they were uncertain if the damage could be repaired.
Firefighters atop ladders cut holes in the house’s roof and knocked in several second story windows to reach the blaze. Smoke could still be seen smoldering from the second floor debris for more than an hour after crews first arrived on the scene.
Troopers from the New York State Police said their agency and the Broome County Fire Investigators were still working to determine the cause.
