Sheriff telling residents to lock up in wake of recent thefts

NORWICH – The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office is asking that drivers lock their vehicles in light of a recent surge in car-related thefts.
Police reported they have received a high volume of complaints in the last few weeks of residents having their personal belongings taken from inside unlocked vehicles.
Lt. James Lloyd said deputies had recently responded to incidents near the Chenango Lake area in the Town of New Berlin, County Route 32 and Dan Main Hill Road both in the Town of Norwich.
“We’ve seen a high number of car thefts in the last few weeks. People are leaving their doors unlocked. The thieves just go up to a vehicle and if it’s locked, they just move on down to the next,” said the lieutenant.
In addition to about a dozen other petit larceny complaints, Lloyd said last week burglars had also broken into the Polkville Hill Store in the Town of Norwich.
Deputies are asking residents to keep their eyes open, especially at night, Lloyd said, adding that the thefts seem to occur on weekend nights between the hours of 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.
He explained that a recent report indicated someone actually witnessed one of the crimes, but did not call it in until the next morning.
The stolen items are usually anything of portable value and have included GPS systems, CDs, cell phones, cash, iPods, purses and wallets.
Police said they believed that some of the items were being pawned for small amounts of cash and believe the crimes may be drug driven.
To contact the Sheriff’s Office call 334-2000, and press extension 1. All calls will be kept confidential.
