Oxford Blackhawks Tournament
OXFORD – Greene’s unbeaten streak this season continued at the Oxford Blackhawks Field Hockey Tournament this weekend.
The Trojans advanced to the finals with a 5-2 win over Harpursville, then blanked a pesky Sidney team, 5-0 for the tourney title on Saturday.
Andrea Day had two goals for the Trojans against Sidney, and Greene rode a strong first half to a 3-0 advantage. “Sidney is a tough team with good speed,” said Greene coach Sue Carlin. “I felt we just played really well.”
Greene scored just 1:02 into the game after drawing a penalty corner. Erin Smith fired a shot that went just right of the goal post, but Amy David was on the spot to tip it into the cage. Anna Crumb and Jahna Driscoll added goals in the championship win.
“Even though we scored two more goals in the second half, Sidney fought us hard,” Carlin said. “We made some passing combinations that were really pretty cool. We’re solid at all of our positions and everyone is playing well.”
The Trojans set the tourney pattern for fast starts building a 4-0 lead over Harpursville by halftime on Friday. Day had the game’s first goal off a pass from Emily Conroe. Freshman Emma Anderson came off the bench to score the second goal, and Anderson added a second goal before halftime. “Before I put Emma in, I told her to go in and score a goal for me,” Carlin said, who kidded Anderson after her second goal. “When she scored the second one, I said to her, ‘I only told you to score one.’”
Anna Crumb and Smith also had goals in the blowout victory.
Crumb, Smith, David, and Chrissy Conroe were the Trojans’ selections to the all-tournament team.
Greene hosts Windsor Tuesday night at 5:30 p.m. on the new field turf facility.
---
Oxford put forth its best offensive performances at its home tourney, although each contest ended in defeat.
Friday, Lyndsay Delello scored in overtime for the Warriors leading her team to a 3-2 victory over the Blackhawks. It was a much tighter contest than the first meeting this season in which Sidney rolled to a blowout win.
Of note, Oxford goalie Alyshia Crawford made a 75-yard clear deep into Sidney territory to set up one of Lacey Barry’s two goals on the day.
In the consolation game Saturday night, Harpursville had four different players score to prevail over Oxford, 4-2.
Ashley Nichols and Nicole Stoddard scored unassisted for the Blackhawks. “I felt we played (Harpursville) evenly, and it was nice to get some shots on goal,” said Oxford coach Melissa Chrystie.
