Hausrath inducted into National Wrestling Hall of Fame
EAST SYRACUSE – Former Sherburne-Earlville wrestling coach, Richard “Pete” Hausrath, was one of seven men inducted into the New York Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, Sunday, Sept. 27 at the Double Tree Hotel in East Syracuse.
Hausrath’s participation in wrestling at Massapequa High School under the tutelage of Coach John Haas was to mark the beginning of more than five decades of dedication to wrestling as a competitor and a coach.
During his coaching career, Hausrath held varsity positions at Oelwein High School in Iowa, Sherburne-Earlville, and and Perham, Minnesota as well as several assistant coaching assignments. Additionally, he was a two-time National Freestyle/Greco Roman coach, and assisted Coach Jack Stanbro in developing a cultural exchange program and a Summer National Tournament. “Pete” has also had the honor of coaching several all-Americans.
Working as a guest clinician, coach Hausrath has trained thousands of young wrestlers in Iowa, North Dakota, New York, and Minnesota. In all, he has directed over fifty “Red Flag” Wrestling Camps.A member of the Iowa State University wrestling team and the NYAC National Championship team in the early ‘60s, was twice named Section IV Coach of the Year in 1978 and 1979 while at Sherburne-Earlville.
“Pete” is appreciative of the encouragement and guidance he received from some of the great names in American wrestling through out his career including Dan Gable, Harold Nichols, Lou Giani, Robert Smith, Les Anderson and others. A retired teacher of 40 years and father of Heather, Morgan, Heidi and Jonathan, this resident of South New Berlin is currently serving as an assistant coach for the Unadilla Valley High School wrestling program.
