No quorum at S-E board meeting

SHERBURNE – No action could be taken at a meeting of the Sherburne-Earlville Board of Education Monday night for lack of a quorum.
Instead of conducting business on the agenda, which would have included an executive session to discuss union and tenure contracts, the two members present (and approximately 10 in attendance) heard informational reports only.
Assistant Superintendent Thomas Strain did take time to address the latest state education take-backs proposed by New York Governor David Paterson last week. The effect on the Sherburne-Earlville district could amount to $371,800, but he said residents “shouldn’t hyper-ventilate” over it.
“We were told that the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding would give us back the $653,000 that was taken at mid -year as part of the Governor’s deficit reduction plan then,” he said, “but, we never counted on it, anyway. So, if ARRA comes, we’ll be getting back close to this latest cut.”
Governor David Paterson’s latest deficit reduction plan could amount to more than $2.3 million in cuts to schools across the state.
One of the district’s three Health Department teachers, Kathryn Sands, described a new, computerized textbook that students are using. The program has sections for note taking, a glossary and vocabulary word games, and enables students to e-mail their homework, quizzes and tests to their teachers. Students can read the web-based “book” online from their home computers, or, if they don’t have a computer, use one in the classroom or one of several available at the library.
Elementary Jazz Band Teacher Jonna Bartlett presented a new extra pay, extra duty assignment that she has taken on unofficially for the past several years. She had hoped the board would consider establishing it as part of the school’s regular offerings.
Bartlett has been advising a jazz band that was formed back in 2004/2005 by a group of 10-year old beginning musicians. She said she wasn’t sure that interest would last, but the program has grown over the years into a 10 to 25 member, two-day a week after school activity.
The school district’s board is scheduled to meet next at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 9 in the elementary school library.
