Cyclones’ A, C team reach league title games

NORWICH – The Norwich Cyclones’ “C” team earned a spot in the Tri-Valley League championship game by defeating Marcy/Deerfield 27-20 in a hard-fought contest last weekend at Alumni Field.
The Cyclones, Eastern Division champs, will face the undefeated Western Division champs, Cazenovia, Saturday at noon in Canastota.
Cole Rifanburg knotted the score at 7-7 early in the second stanza on an eight-yard touchdown run and point-after pass to Carter Hubbard. With 24 seconds remaining until halftime, Rifanburg completed a 10-yard TD toss to Dalen Geislinger. Hubbard ran in the conversion for a 14-14 halftime score.
Two fourth-quarter TDs, a two-yard run by Rifanburg, and a 15-yard run by Hubbard with 3:12 remaining, sealed the win.
On defense, Mathew Tubbs recovered a key fumble in the fourth quarter at the Norwich 20. Cameron Ivan made a big fourth-quarter stop with Michael Carson, Paden Burlison, Marcus Benjamin, and Hubbard playing big D as well.  Alexander Wehrli recovered a fumble in the second quarter that led to a Cyclones score. Hubbard rushed for 101 yards with Rifanburg adding 80.
The Cyclones’ A team enjoyed a rare treat defeating Vernon-Vernon-Sherrill a second time this season, this time, 29-8.
The Cyclones will now face Utica in Canastota on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the championship game
The Norwich defense, led by John Marvin, Matt Craig, Trent Stone, Spencer Stone, Michael Sutton, Michael Oralls, and Tristan Rifanburg, dominated the line of scrimmage.  Ethan Kelly had a fumble recovery, with Matt Burke adding a 50-yard interception for a touchdown on the last play of the half.  It was Burke’s second long interception return of 50 yards or more at Alumni Field.
Michael Oralls started the Cyclones’ scoring in the first on a seven-yard TD run, and set up the second with a 55-yard ramble to the Red Devils’ 12. That set up a Keegan Franklin three-yard TD.
Franklin scored the last touchdown of the year at Alumni in the third quarter with a 90-yard TD run – untouched – up the middle.  This TD was the longest at Alumni Field by the Cyclones in the 40 years of the program, and one of the four longest ever.
Randy Stokes kicked two conversions with Burke running one in.  Stokes provided some excitement on the second half kickoff as the V-V-S ball carrier broke free. Despite trailing the runner by 15 yards, Stokes still managed to catch him at the 20 yard line.
The Cyclone “D” team was at Alumni Field, also, and easily stopped a strong Waterville club to finish a great season with an unblemished record.
The Cyclones’ “B” team was at Holland Patent in the playoffs, and fell 14-0 to finish third overall in the B Division.  The score was 0-0 at the half with Holland Patent returning a punt for a TD and adding a long run in the fourth.
Carlos Ithier ran well for the Cyclones, with Killian Benedict playing big defense and Dan Zieno recovering a fumble.
Before the start of the “A” game, League president, Lyle Malbouf, inducted Bob Goodrich into the Tri-Valley League Hall of Fame. Goodrich was one of the founders of the Cyclones, and has been involved in the program for 40 years. Goodrich is deeply respected by all who have had contact with him in the league. He is the longest serving commissioner in the T-V League and the entire United States Eastern Region of Pop Warner.
