Oxford restaurateurs open second location

SIDNEY – Residents of the Sidney area will no longer need to travel all the way to Oxford to get their fix of the Italian cuisine which has made Roma Ristorante and Pizzeria a favorite destination for many. On Tuesday, the popular restaurant opened its second location, at 25 Union Street in Sidney.
Those familiar with Sidney may recognize the address as being that of Michelangelo’s, which closed its doors on Mother’s Day.
According to owner Mike Barone, he and his partners had been looking to open a second location in the area for about a year. They were drawn to the Union Street property because of it’s proximity both to downtown Sidney and several large local businesses, he said.
They acquired the building on July 1, and immediately began an extensive renovation. The building had started out as a fast food restaurant, Barone explained, and despite other occupants over the years, had never been fully remodeled before he took ownership.
“The ambiance was always (that of) a Hardee’s,” the restaurateur reported.
Well, not any more.
“We completely gutted it,” Barone said. Now the space has a rustic look, with wood paneling, Italian-themed artwork and new burgundy floor coverings. Tumbled marble and local bluestone also features prominently in the new decor.
Much of the work involved in the renovation was done by Barone himself, with the help of his father Anthony, business partner Dave Shull and manager Tom Seminera.
It was a larger project than they had anticipated, but the finished product was worth extra time, effort and energy, according to the partners.
“You’ve got to put your heart and soul into it,” said Barone, as he surveyed their handiwork.
While they tried to keep publicity to a minimum during the renovation process, they still managed to attract attention from those who live and work in the area.
“Since July, people have been coming in every day and asking when we’re going to open,” Barone said.
According to Shull, the space is larger than the restaurant’s Oxford location, with room to comfortably seat approximately 100 diners. The menu, however, is the same. Guests will have a variety of pizzas, pastas, oven baked dishes and other Italian specialties, as well as an array of appetizers, salads, heroes and daily specials to choose from.
Catering is also be available, he added.
Roma Ristorante and Pizzeria’s new location is situated at 25 Union Street in Sidney. They can be reached via phone at 563-8888. Hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from noon to 10 p.m. on Sunday.
