Cyclones beat Sherman Park of Nottingham, 26-0

ROME – The Norwich Cyclones’ “A”  team stopped Sherman Park of Syracuse, 26-0 in the first round of the Empire State Classic Tournament here Saturday.
The Cyclones mounted a 56-yard scoring drive in the first quarter, after holding the Bulldogs, with Keegan Franklin taking it in from the five.
Spencer Stone recovered a Bulldogs fumble at the 15 in the second quarter, with Michael Oralls scoring from the one for a 12-0 halftime Cyclones lead.
Oralls scored again on a two-yard plunge in the third, this one set up by a 32-yard run by Randy Stokes.  Trent Stone recovered another Bulldogs fumble at the 17, also in the third stanza.  This time, Michael Sutton hit Frank Garcia with the 17-yard TD toss.  Stokes then kicked a two-point conversion.
Sherman Park never mounted a serious threat toward the Cyclones’ end zone crossing the 50 only once.  The swarming Cyclones defense, strong all year, had several players in on each tackle, and held the Bulldogs to only four first downs.  It was an example of team defense as there were few solo tackles.
Garcia also recovered a fumble with Oralls, the Stones, Sutton, Tristan Rifanburg, Matt Craig, and Storm Cook playing big defense as well.
The Cyclones, now 10-0, have allowed the opposition only 344 total yards, and the starting defense has not given up a point.
Longtime Cyclones player, Garrett Steiber, saw his first action of the season on Saturday.  Garrett, in his sixth season as a Cyclones player, had a serious accident in August. He attended all of the practices and games to support his teammates, and all were glad to see him back on the field.
The Cyclones are in action Sunday in Syracuse at The Valley Sports Complex  against Southside Rochester at  2 p.m.
