Time runs out on Cyclones’ state title bid

MARCELUS – The Cyclones’ final drive of the season reached the one-foot line as time expired in a 14-12 loss to Southwest Rochester in the Empire State Classic Pop Warner semifinals Saturday.
Norwich (10-1) drove 66 yards in the final two minutes only to fall short on the clock.
In the first half, the Cyclones mounted an 80-yard drive in the second quarter with Frank Garcia taking it in from the five-yard line. Also in the second quarter, Garcia raced 23 yards to the Colts’ 10-yard line with Michael Oralls taking the next handoff to paydirt for a 12-0 Cyclones halftime lead.
In the third, the Southwest Colts went on a nine-minute drive with Sammy Jones scoring from 10 yards out, and the Colts also kicked a two-point conversion cutting the Cyclones’ lead to 12-8. In the fourth quarter, Jones scored again to make it 14-12.
With just under two minutes to go in the game, Norwich quarterback Michael Sutton found Keegan Franklin for a 37-yard pass taking the Cyclones to the Colts 11-yard line for a first-and-10.
An apparent first down to the one-foot line with a run by Garcia could have stopped the clock as the time ran out on the Cyclones season. The Cyclones’ starting defense, who gave up just 14 points all season, was led by Trent Stone. Stone, along with the entire Cyclones defense, held the Colts at bay for most of the day.
Rochester, considered the premier Pop Warner league in the Eastern Region, said the Cyclones were the toughest team they faced all season. A large crowd of Norwich supporters were on hand to witness a great football game played by both football teams.
The Cyclones finish their 40th season with another Tri-Valley League championship and one loss in 11 games. Only two other teams in the 40 years of Cyclone football had 10-win seasons with the 1983 team reaching an 11-0 mark.
The Cyclones’ B team cheerleaders competed in the state cheerleading competition Saturday in Poughkeepsie, and did an outstanding job.
The Cyclones players and cheerleaders will wrap up the season with season-ending banquets. The dates for each banquet: D team, Nov. 29 at 5 p.m. at the Norwich YMCA; C team, Jan. 15, 7 p.m. at St. Bartholomew’s Parish Center; B team, Jan. 16, 7 p.m. at St Bart’s; and A team, Jan. 17 at 4 p.m. at St. Bart’s. Respective coaches from each team will call the players to place reservations.
