Two-car collision sends one to Wilson

NORWICH – The glare of the afternoon sun may be to blame for a two-car collision which took place shortly after 3 p.m. on Tuesday at the intersection of Rt. 12 and Upper Ravine Road in the Town of Norwich.
According to Trooper Neil Case of the New York State Police, Betty Conant, 71, of Norwich was attempting to turn left into the Walmart parking lot from the southbound turn lane of Rt. 12 when she struck a passenger vehicle driving north on the state highway.
The second vehicle “overturned twice according to witnesses at the scene,” Case reported. The driver, 73 year-old Shirley Acly of Greene, was extricated from the vehicle by Norwich Fire and Rescue crews, who were the first on the scene.
“They had to use the jaws of life to get the lady out,” said Shanna Harmon, a Walmart employee who was leaving work at the time of the crash and witnessed the collision.
According to Norwich Fire Chief Tracy Chawgo, Acly was conscious and talking when responders arrived at the scene. After being removed from the vehicle, she was transported by ambulance to Wilson Memorial Hospital.
“She’s lucky,” Chawgo said, explaining that the decision to bring the woman to the trauma center rather than have her treated locally was done as a precaution because of the nature of the crash rather than a reflection of her injuries. No further information about Acly’s condition was available as of press time.
A distraught Conant, who was comforted at the scene by Harmon and a friend, complained of some minor aches and pains but appeared uninjured. She told Chawgo a friend would take her to Chenango Memorial to get checked out once she was able to leave the scene.
The 71-year old Norwich native said the sun had been in her eyes and she remembers seeing a green light, but never saw the oncoming car or the red arrow that witnesses say she went through.
“I didn’t even know what hit me,” she sobbed.
The State Police issued two tickets to Conant at the scene: one for failing to obey a traffic control device and the other for failing to stop on a red arrow. Both are traffic infractions, according to Case.
“The sun is kind of blinding here, but she went through the red arrow,” the trooper said.
No other tickets were issued at the scene, he added, but the investigation is still ongoing.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene by wreckers from River Road Auto. The intersection was cleared and opened to traffic within an hour of the crash.
