Greene ninth grader plays Mayor for a Day
GREENE – What does it take to be mayor in the village of Greene? Apparently, two boxes of Jell-O.
Those packets of flavored gelatin were the non-perishable food items Greene High School Freshman John Smith brought to the Halloween Dance on Oct. 31. Not only did his donation for the food pantry secure him reduced price admission to the event, but it also entered him into the second annual “Mayor for a Day” contest, sponsored by Village of Greene Mayor Marcia Miller.
When dance-goers succeeded in filling Miller’s Ford Explorer with food for the pantry during the dance, one lucky winner was granted the honor of playing mayor for a day. This year, that winner was Smith.
The ninth grader has two older sisters, Joleene and Amanda, and is the son of Smithville residents Virginia and Gary Smith.
On Tuesday, Nov. 17, the young man was sworn in to his temporary office and given his mayoral tour of the village.
After touring the village’s sewer plant, electric and water departments; watching public works crews laying drainage pipe along North Chenango Street; and witnessing demonstrations of the Greene Police Department’s license plate reader and K-9 in action, Smith had a new appreciation for the job.
“It takes a lot of work,” he said. And that was before he had a taste of another aspect of the job – paperwork. After lunch and a quick tour of the fire house, Smith spent some time behind Miller’s desk handling correspondence, returning phone calls and processing bills.
“It’s been fun,” the teen said, of his day in office.
The experience didn’t, however, awaken any political aspirations in the young man. While he didn’t entirely rule out a run for public office at some point in the future, Smith, whose favorite subject is math, said his future ambition is to be a chef.
