McDONOUGH – Not even winter driving conditions could deter McDonough residents from trekking to the center of town on Saturday for the municipality’s annual holiday celebration and tree lighting. In fact, the consensus among the record crowd in attendance was that Mother Nature’s contribution only added to the ambiance.

More than 150 people were present at the town hall for the event, which kicked off at 4:30 p.m. with the arrival of Santa Claus. Transportation for the red-suited holiday icon was provided by the McDonough Volunteer Fire Department, which co-sponsored the event with the McDonough Improvement Committee.

Santa was greeted by a horde of local children, all of whom were clamoring for the chance to sit on his lap and share their Christmas wish list. Parents chatted amiably and enjoyed cookies and hot cocoa while listening to the United Church of Oxford Praise Band perform a selection of traditional holiday music. In addition, author Dustin Warburtin, a McDonough native, was on hand signing copies of his books and the local postmaster held a special stamp cancellation in honor of the event.

Shortly before 6 p.m., the crowd moved outside to witness the lighting of the 115-foot Norwich Spruce which stands proudly at the McDonough four-corners. The stately conifer received a makeover this year thanks to the efforts of Patricia Ford and other town residents, who raised more than $5,400 purchase new LED lights for the tree.
