Hit & run suspect caught on video
NORWICH – The Norwich Police Department said they have a surveillance video showing a vehicle involved in Wednesday’s hit and run accident and the recording available to the public.
The Evening Sun has posted the 29-second video on its Facebook page at www.facebook.com/theeveningsun. The pickup truck heading west on Eaton Avenue appears in the video at 1:25 p.m. and 54 seconds. It travels down the street, rolling through the stop sign at the intersection of Elm Street before continuing out of the camera’s sight west on Eaton Avenue.
Police believe the truck in the video is the one that rear-ended another car, causing it to crash into a doctor’s office on Broad Street just seconds before it appeared on the recording.
“The more people who see this video, the better the chance we have of identifying the operator,” said Norwich Police Chief Joseph Angelino. “Our next step is to send this video to a laboratory to have it enhanced for clarity.”
The chief said the recording would be forwarded to a crime lab in the Binghamton area that specializes in enhancing images for law enforcement.
The accident occurred at 1:25 p.m. Wednesday when the victim driver, Anne Ward of Manley Road, Norwich, slowed her Ford Escort Wagon to make a right turn into the Podiatric Medicine & Surgery Office at 85 South Broad.
Just behind her and heading north on the road, a truck with dark green or blue paint on it rear-ended her vehicle. The force of the impact caused Ward’s vehicle to slide across the business’s lawn, smashing into the front porch and brick foundation.
Police said witnesses saw the suspect’s vehicle heading north on South Broad St. (state Highway 12) and are asking anyone with information to call 334-1212. All calls will be kept confidential.
“Right now the operator has a chance to turn himself in. We would consider that as cooperating with our investigation. If we have to invest our time, effort and money into locating the operator through investigation, that, too, will be taken into account, I’m sure,” said Angelino.
After heading North on Broad Street, police believe the truck made a left hand turn onto Eaton Avenue, where it appeared in the surveillance video.
