S-E outlasts B-G in double overtime

Sherburne-Earlville 68, Bainbridge-Guilford 63 (2 OT)
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville overcame a nine-point deficit to begin the fourth quarter, and outlasted Bainbridge-Guilford in double overtime, Saturday in the S-E Tournament championship game.
Tourney MVP Caitlynn Adams scored a career-high 30 points, and her steal and layup with 42 seconds left in the second extra period pushed the margin to 66-63. All-Tournament selection, Bridget Irwin, tacked on two late free throws, and Irwin just missed a triple-double, scoring 16 points, grabbing 14 rebounds, and dishing out nine assists. Adams added 13 boards.
“This game was kind of a test to see how we would respond to that type of situation (down nine points),” said S-E coach Karen Mulligan. “We kept digging in and digging in. Give B-G credit, they’re scrappy and tough.”
The Bobcats (2-2) shook off a slow start in which S-E grabbed an 18-9 first-quarter lead, and actually led 30-26 at halftime. Randi Conway and Corrine Riegel had three-pointers in the third quarter extending the lead to 45-36.
Conway led B-G with 19 points before fouling out. Riegel added 17, and Chelsi Rosa scored 15 points and pulled down 19 rebounds. Two other Bobcats fouled out during the overtime periods.
“We moved the ball well and that gave us good shot opportunities,” said B-G coach Bob Conway of his team’s turnaround in the middle quarters. “(Three players fouling out) hurt us, but Corinne Riegel played great in the overtime periods.”
Adams had a three-point play early in the fourth, and Kristi Vibbard’s three-pointer brought S-E to within 45-44 just two minutes into the last quarter. Adams hit one of two free throws with 4.3 seconds left to force overtime.
Riegel had all seven of her team's points in the first extra period, the last two on free throws with 3.5 seconds left knotting the game at 61-61.
Friday, Bridget Irwin scored 11 points and pulled down 16 rebounds in the Marauders’ 48-42 win over Clinton.
Kristi Vibbard led S-E to a 27-24 halftime lead scored all 14 of her points including four three-pointers. Meanwhile, the S-E defense slowed Clinton six-foot center Kate Thompson over the final two quarters. Thompson finished with 18 points, but only four came in the second half.
B-G defeated Unadilla Valley, 46-26, to advance to the final. Conway had eight of her 20 points in the second quarter, six of those on a pair of three-pointers. B-G finished with 18 offensive rebounds, many of which were converted into put-back baskets, said head coach Bob Conway.
