Studebaker’s closes its doors; Denny’s soon to open in its place
NORWICH – After seven years serving Norwich and surrounding communities, Studebaker’s Restaurant closed its doors Monday, according to Howard Johnson’s General Manager Dana Meyer. But while the eating establishment’s closure may be the end of the era for the hotel, it opens the door for the next phase in the facility’s development.
“The rumor about Denny’s is true,” explained Meyer, referring to speculation that the family-style restaurant chain, known for its round-the-clock breakfast offerings, would be opening a Norwich location.
According to the facility’s manager, the hotel’s parent company, Banta Properties, has been in negotiations with the franchise owner who operates the Denny’s location in Oneonta to lease the 96-seat restaurant.
For Meyer, who started as a server at Studebaker’s three years ago and worked her way up to general manager, closing the restaurant was difficult, particularly as it meant letting go eight full and part-time staff members. But it is also an exciting opportunity.
“I think it will be good for the community,” she explained. “Denny’s is a well known brand and I think it will do well.”
While she said she was unsure of the exact timeline for the re-opening of the establishment, Meyer assured that in the interim they would still be honoring their existing banquet and event bookings. They will continue to offer wedding and banquet services after the changeover as well, she said.
The facility’s bar will continue to be operated by the hotel, she added. Daily operating hours for the lounge will continue as normal for the time being, but will be expanded in the near future.
City of Norwich Mayor Joe Maiurano said he had been aware of the negotiations between the hotel’s management and the Denny’s franchise since September.
“I think it will be very good for the city,” he said, explaining his belief that Norwich would benefit from the chain’s advertising and promotional efforts.
City of Norwich Supervisor James McNeil, who represents Wards 1, 2 and 3, said he felt it was important for the facility to have a viable restaurant.
“I hope that it’s a smooth transition,” McNeil said.
