Local aviation enthusiasts hold annual dinner
NORWICH – Approximately two dozen local aviation enthusiasts gathered to recognize their organization’s contributions to the local aviation community during the Experimental Aircraft Association’s annual dinner on Monday night at the Cafe Connection in Norwich.
Comprised of local recreational pilots, flight instructors, experimental aircraft builders and balloonists, EAA is dedicated to generating interest in aviation. The local chapter is led by President Dave Sheldon.
“Our chapter continues to do interesting things every year,” said Sheldon, as he addressed the members and spouses present.
One of their most notable efforts each year is the Young Eagle Program, which provides free flights to young people interested in flying.
“Young Eagles continues to be one of the biggest hits of Airport Day,” Sheldon reported, referencing the event held each June at the Lt. Warren E. Eaton Airport in Norwich.
According to private pilot Dave Dibbell, who coordinates the program, a record number of free flights - 72 - were given during the 2009 event.
Dibbell, who serves as the chapter’s secretary and newsletter editor in addition to his Young Eagles role, was recognized with three Service Awards for his efforts in promoting aviation and his contributions to the organization.
Ultralight pilot Joe Toriello, who serves as chapter treasurer, and the organization’s vice president, balloonist Steve Bliss were also recognized with Service Awards during the event.
Sheldon also had words of appreciation for Bliss and chapter member Joanie Spicer for organizing the dinner, and Geri and Fred Barnes, owners of The Cafe Connection, for hosting the event. The Barnes’ are avid balloonists and members of EAA.
