SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville won the final three matches picking up 12 team points, and edged Norwich in a non-league dual meet Thursday night.
The telltale victory came at 112 pounds when S-E’s Spencer Franklin outlasted Norwich’s Tanner Cummings, 14-12 in overtime. Each wrestler exchanged reversals and takedowns throughout the bout. Cummings went for the early takedown in overtime, but had the tables turned and ended up on the bottom as Franklin scrambled for the win. Last weekend, Franklin beat Cummings 13-10 in the Ilion Tournament.
“That was the key match,” said S-E head coach Bim Palmer of the 112-pound encounter. “Spencer just seems to find a way to come out on top in those scrambles. That’s his strength.”
Norwich had the early momentum with Zack Ketchum taking a technical fall win at 130 pounds, and Matt Thompson rallying from an early deficit and a nearfall to close out the 135-pound division with a 15-9 win over Cody Williams.
Cameron Turner won a 5-2 decision at 145 pounds for Norwich, Kegan Levesque (189) edged the Marauders’ Justin Coye, 11-9, and Frankie Garcia (103) scored a come-from-behind 8-5 win over S-E’s Tyi Franklin. All of the close matches were leaning Norwich’s way, but the dual meet victory was ultimately denied.
“This match was a lot of fun,” said Norwich coach Joe Downey. “We had some guys that wrestled tough and they’re all improving. We just fell a little short tonight.”
Greg DuVall (140) and Dan Cleveland (152) had impressive pins for the Marauders, whose dual meet record moved over .500 at 6-5.
Norwich countered those pins with sticks of their own. Cody Bradbury (160) and Morgan Crawford (171) earned victories for the Tornado.
Adding six key team points for S-E was Erik Eichler (215), who received a forfeit. “That’s a kid who dropped about 60 pounds, and that was the first time he’s made that weight this season,” Downey said of Eichler. “Hat’s off to him. If he doesn’t make weight, the match is ours.”
