Hip hop musician, slam poet to perform in Norwich
NORWICH – B. Yung, a familiar face in the Hip Hop music world and newly embraced by the American spoken word community, will be featured at an open slam night at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Cafe Connection in downtown Norwich.
“We are pleased to have B. Yung here. He is a top notch performer and his poetry explores language in innovate ways,” said local poet Emily Vogel, sponsor of the event.
Past and present members of the Norwich High School student poetry club among other guest performers will follow Yung in an open mike, two round slam. Coffees, wines, beers, and desserts will be available for purchase at the Cafe, located on Broad Street.
Yung began honing his spoken word skills in 2006 as a performer in “LA’s Def Poetry Allstar show” by Stan Lathan. In 2008, he ranked second in the nation with Urban Word NYC’s slam team at the Brave New Voices national competition. He also took 1st place in the Robert Redford Speak Green competition that was held at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C, earning him a chance to perform at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.
Yung is currently on a performance tour at colleges and various venues all around the world, including places like China, Japan, Russia and England. At the same time, he working on a new release with upcoming producer Phonix titled “Eye of the Prince” (set to drop sometime in the spring of 2010).
Last year, he joined the Legendary Us3 Band and began traveling Europe on the “Stop, Think, Run” tour. Later, his song entitled, “Love Of My Life” (produced by Geoff Wilkinson) premiered on MTV and VH1 Soul and is still running in heavy rotation. Recently, the album has been ranked 7th in the Village Voice Rap Review for top 10 album of the year 2009.
The performer has appeared in Sprite commercials, ESPN specials and many internet blogs.
