The Place honors longtime volunteer Robert Handy at annual meeting
NORWICH – On Monday, Jan. 11, the Board of Directors, Executive Director, and staff of The Christian Neighborhood Center of Norwich (AKA The Place) honored long time board member and volunteer Robert Handy.
The group took the annual board meeting as an opportunity to honor the many years of service that Handy offered to the organization. During the past seven years, his contributions included two full three-year board terms and a one year extension, serving not only as a board member, but also as treasurer of the organization.
Handy is a retired school counselor with the Norwich City School District, and a lifelong resident of Norwich. He looks forward to spending some of his newfound free time with his wife, Joyce, and is hoping to spend more time traveling in the near future.
The Place, located at 20 East Main Street in Norwich, offers a continuum of youth development programs for ages 5-24 years including, After School, mentoring, Service Learning and AmeriCorps opportunities.
The Place annual meeting included reports from Executive Director Dave Sheldon, and Board President David Harris. Both reported that The Place had a strong growth year in 2009, and improved the quality and quantity of services provided. A not-for-profit organization, The Place receives some funding from state and federal grants, from a founding group of Christian churches, the United Way, other local foundations, local businesses, and from private donors.
