Driver at accident scene gets violent with cops

NORWICH – Norwich Police Officers responding to a two-car accident this morning were involved in an altercation with one of the vehicle’s drivers. He’s now been charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated. As of press time this morning, police were still looking for other passengers who fled the scene.

At about 8 a.m. Friday, police were called to the scene of an accident at the intersection of Sheldon and Silver streets between an SUV and a four-door Mercury sedan. When police arrived, they said they found the driver of the sedan acting violently and when they approached him, he grabbed the first officer at the scene and knocked him to the ground, according to Officer Michael A. Purdy.

Moments later, other officers arrived to help subdue the driver and take him into custody. The officer was not injured in the altercation. Purdy said the sedan had three occupants, two of whom fled the scene after the accident.
