S-E wins first class title in 26 years

SHERBURNE – Before its home crowd, Sherburne-Earlville won its first sectional class tournament in 26 years, and did so in an underdog role Saturday night.
The Marauders overcame state-ranked General Brown, Adirondack, and Mohawk to place first in the Section III, Class C tourney scoring 180.5 points, six better than pre-tournament favorite General Brown.
S-E was also the fourth Chenango County team to win a sectional class tournament this past weekend. “It was just unbelievable for us to win, and just a great team effort,” said S-E assistant coach, Brian Hicks. “Not just the wrestling, with the parents and everyone that helped out, it allowed us to focus on the kids wrestling.”
Tyi Franklin (26-3) gave S-E one of its two titles winning at 103 pounds with a 14-6 decision win over Tim Fargo of Lowville. Greg DuVall (29-0) stayed unbeaten winning the 135-pound title by third-period pinfall. Overall, S-E had nine wrestlers place in the top four, all of whom earned trips to the Section III small school sectional championships.
Spencer Franklin (112) and Derrick Nelson (285) were second, Dustin Mosely (96), Danny Cleveland (145), and Justin Coye (189) were third, while Calvin Minkler (96) and Alec Sheddon (119) took fourth.
“We had three guys wrestle back to take third, and right there that helped,” Hicks said. “The five that made it back to the consolation finals was the difference.”

WALTON – Walton rallied from 24-21 deficit in the decisive fifth game to capture the Midstate Athletic Conference volleyball championship on Monday night.
Facing an Oxford team coming off its first MAC division title, Walton dropped two of the first three games, and were on the verge of defeat.
Victoria McClenon led the unbeaten Warriors (17-0) with 14 kills, Nikki Bowker added 12 kills and 14 digs.
Oxford (12-7) received four aces, seven kills, and nine digs from Kalah Parks, and Sienna Brown racked up three aces, four kills, and 18 digs.

COPES CORNERS – G-MU moved one win from clinching the Tri-Valley League Western Division title beating Morris on Monday night.
Tanya Barnes continued her recent torrid scoring pace bucketing a game-high 28 points, and forward Brianne Lambert chipped in with 17. “It was probably our most comfortable league win,” said G-MU coach Jim Johnson. “Morris is a decent team, but we played well, and Bri and Tanya carved them up, while the rest of the team didn’t make mistakes and did all of the little things well.”
G-MU (7-4, 9-7) can clinch the division title outright when it plays at Laurens on Friday night.
