NHS’s Ostrom captures two section titles

OWEGO – Norwich senior swimmer Trey Ostrom became the first Norwich swimmer in eight years to sweep the 50- and 100-yard freestyles, and was the Class B and overall Section IV swimming champion in each event, Saturday at Owego Free Academy High School.
Ostrom earned state meet qualifying times as well finishing the 50 in 22.49 and 100 in 49.32. Dan Holmberg, a former teammate of Ostrom’s coach, Jon Aikins, won the same two events in 2002.
“He just had an amazing performance,” Aikins said of Ostrom. “It takes almost a perfect 50 to do what he did, and he had almost a perfect race in the 100.”
Ostrom was the top seed in the 100, and lived up to his seeding. He came from the number three spot in the shorter race to complete his sweep. Ostrom also swam the anchor leg in Norwich’s third-place 200-yard medley relay (1:49.41) teaming with Lucas Follett, Nick Mooney, and Mike Reilly.
“I was satisfied with our overall performance,” Aikins said. “We had about a 95 percent time drops in all of the events our kids swam. I really believe the newcomers saw what swimming is all about, and saw how energetic everyone is at sectionals. I think that will motivate people and spread the word about swimming.”
Ostrom will compete in the New York State swimming and diving meet on Feb. 26-27 at Erie Community College in Buffalo.
