Girl Scouts join Norwich Campus SGO to support troops
NORWICH – Girl Scout Troop 547 has partnered with the Morrisville State College Norwich Campus Student Government Organization (SGO), continuing to show thanks to American soldiers stationed in Iraq through its Troop Care Package project.
The project, originally slated to run for a single semester, has been a huge success, according to Coordinator for Academic Support Services Jeri O’Bryan-Losee, who said that community support has been “tremendous.”
As part of its Gift of Caring project, Troop 547 donated 100 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies to the 57th Military Police Company in Iraq, a troop favorite according to O’Bryan-Losee, as well as offering the SGO its remaining supply of nuts and candies from a recent fundraiser.
Girl Scouts Membership Manager Maryrose Maiurano reported that the Gift of Caring project “teams the Girl Scouts up with its customers, purchasing cookies which are then donated to community members, charities or as in this case, service men and women serving overseas.”
“It’s fantastic that our two organizations could come together and show support for the troops,” said O’bryan-Losee. “It worked out perfectly. They had the donations, and the SGO had the funds to get them shipped.”
Due to the unexpected surplus of donations, including food, games, music, correspondence and toiletries, the Troop Care Package project will continue to send packages to the 57th Military Police Company in Iraq, said O’Bryan-Losee.
“We’ve now sent out 55 boxes of donations, far exceeding the planned 40 boxes,” stated O’Bryan-Losee. “We’ll keep sending them as long as we continue to receive donated items, or until we run out of money, which we use to cover shipping costs.”
