Change in management for county’s bus system
NORWICH – Public bus services provided aren’t being interrupted despite an unexpected change of management at First Transit, Inc.
Chenango County Clerk of the Board RC Woodford heard last week from President and Chief Executive Officer Jeff Thornton that he was no longer with the Cincinnati-based company. Thornton joined the company in 2008.
First Transit confirmed that he had resigned. The local business did not return calls by press time this morning, however.
The transportation service has fixed route contracts with Chenango County for mass transportation services and for the Area Agency on Aging, the Department of Social Services, and Mental Hygiene Services. It also provides transportation for Broome Developmental Services. An estimated 12,000 passengers per month use First Transit’s bus system.
The service’s equipment and contractual expenses are covered by state and federal aid sources.
Area Agency on Aging Services Coordinator Brian Wessels said disruptions in meal deliveries to seniors last Thursday and Friday were weather-related.
First Transit replaced its entire fleet of 23 buses last year.
