History is either working for or against Norwich’s basketball team depending on how you look at things.

Norwich is vying for its second straight Section IV championship tonight when it plays Seton Catholic Central at 7:45 p.m. at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. It’s the Tornado’s eighth finals appearance since 1993, an impressive resume for sure, but Norwich has not gone back-to-back since winning state titles in 1993 and ‘94.

“We’re not looking at it as going back-to-back because last year we were in Class A, and this year we’re in Class B,” said Norwich coach Mark Abbott. “And next year we’ll be back in Class A.”

While Norwich is flip-flopping between classes, Seton has and will remain a force in Class B. The Saints, who lost to Norwich, 63-53, in the Stop-DWI Tournament over two months ago, have gone on a recent tear winning a STAC division title, the STAC team championship, and rolled into the sectional finals with an impressive win over Chenango Valley earlier this week. “The last eight to 10 years, they’ve been a really solid team, and every season they seem to go through a little valley midway through the season,” Abbott said. “They seem to peak at the end of the year, and that’s what you look for your team to do.”
