What we don’t believe
If you support one party or another you may think these questions have something to do with party politics. They do not.
First question: The President assures us his healthcare bill will bring down healthcare costs in this country. Do you believe him? He says government will re-work one-sixth of our economy. In the process it will improve quality in healthcare and not add a dime to our deficit. Do you believe him?
If he says another word about this process being transparent, will you believe him? If he says no congressperson’s vote was bought with appointments for friends or pork for districts, will you believe him?
The Speaker of the House promises something similar? Do you believe her? She also says the House can pass a bi-partisan bill without Republican votes – and still call it bi-partisan. Do you believe her?
The Vice-President says…well, anything. Do you believe him?
The House ethics committee looked at the sleazy stuff Charlie Rangel has been up to and basically looked the other way. Up to his neck in charges of corruption, Rangel claimed the committee believes he is innocent. Do you believe him? Do you believe the members of that committee feel Charlie is pure as driven snow?
Congress just passed a new version of the “pay-go” budget rule. That is, if they increase spending they must raise taxes or cut spending elsewhere. To pay for the new spending. Do you believe they will abide by this? (Hope you did not say yes. Within a week they had already violated it.)
The President appointed a new commission to rein in long-term deficits. They are charged with eliminating the deficit by 2015. Do you believe they will? Do you think there is one person in Washington who believes they will? (Hope you did not say yes to this one either. The fine print says the commission can ignore the portion of the deficit that comes from paying interest. That will only be $571 billion. Only.)
The Brooklyn District Attorney watched the ACORN tapes in which ACORN folks advised a hooker and pimp how to break the law. In numerous ways. The D.A. says “No laws broken here.” Do you believe him?
“We will put Social Security into a lockbox. No one will touch it except those who retire.” Do you believe that?
No doubt you can add to this list of things few of us believe. We can laugh about them. But like a lot of the things we laugh about, they are true. And the truths they represent ought to sober us to another truth. That is that we can neither trust nor believe many of our public officials. We simply do not believe what comes out of their mouths.
If most of what your father or mother told you was a lie, do you suppose this might have affected your perceptions?
Apparently we believe what our Founding Fathers said and wrote. About 84 percent of us told Fox News pollsters recently that the Fathers would be unhappy with the way things are going in Washington these days.
We do not believe what we are told by politicians. And that – sad though it is – is the truth.
