Norwich needs support for after-prom party

NORWICH – The Norwich High School Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) Chapter, in association with this year’s after prom committee, are seeking donations for its ninth annual after prom party.
“Our goal is to provide a safe environment for students following the prom,” said committee member Kathie Deierlein. “It’s important to both students and parents to continue the tradition of keeping our students safe, especially this night.”
Motor vehicle crashes remain the number one cause of death among youth ages 15 to 20, and there were 7,460 youth motor vehicle deaths in 2005, including both drivers and passengers, according to the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration, which added that 28 percent of 15 to 20 year-old drivers who were killed in motor vehicle crashes in 2005 had been drinking.
The Norwich after prom party continues to provide a drug- and alcohol-free environment, said Deierlein.
Following the “Hollywood-themed” promenade, students will enjoy drinks and snacks, entertainment by DJ Mike Marango and the popular “walk-around magic and comedy hypnosis show” by Bob Shelley, said Deierlein.
Other activities planned for the event include “old-time” photos, the adrenaline run obstacle course, “Rapid Fire” (a type of bungee game) and Human Jousting.
Deierlein said the committee, and the local SADD chapter, are hoping to acquire enough funds to purchase a flat-screen television, laptop computer and PS 3 gaming system, to be given away as door prizes. There will also be a pair of $500 cash prizes awarded.
While “donations have remained slow so far,” Deierlein said the committee will continue to meet monthly with students, planning for the event, which will be held from midnight to 5 a.m. on May 16 at the YMCA.
“Everyone involved is just so excited,” stated Deierlein. “It’s so important to the students, and the community, that this event continues to be a positive experience.”
For more information, or to make a donation, which is tax-deductible, contact Anna McLaughlin at 336-5145. Monetary donations may be sent directly to the Norwich High School SADD Chapter, after prom party, Attn: Kelly Collins-Colosi, Midland Drive, Norwich, NY 13815. Door prize donations can also be arranged for pick-up by contacting McLaughlin.
