Sheriff’s Office honors their own

NORWICH – The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office singled out the “above and beyond” contributions of employees at its 18th Annual Award Ceremony honoring patrol, corrections and civil division personnel.
The sheriff honored officers at a dinner dinner held at the agency’s offices in Norwich before a crowd of over 100 people last week.
The office’s top honor, the Joseph J. Benenati Jr. award, was presented to Chief Civil Clerk Patricia J. Collier. Collier was hired in 1973 by Sheriff Benenati at the time and will be retiring in 2010 after serving the public more than 37 years.
Sheriff Ernest R. Cutting Jr. said Collier earned the award for her career achievements and outstanding performance in handling the agency’s civil department.
“This award marks an incredible career with the sheriff’s office. There are very few who can say they’ve invested as much time in serving the people of Chenango County and certainly she will be missed,” said Undersheriff James Lloyd.
Officer of The Year awards were presented to the most outstanding individual in the patrol, corrections, civil and dispatch divisions. The award honors exemplary service to the members who contribute “a professional distinction,” explained Lloyd.
• Civil – Clerk Kimberly Smith: Has worked for office since 1988 and duties include the organization of the scheduled activities for Sheriff’s summer camp.
• Public Safety – Dispatcher Daron R. Schultes: Hired in 2003 and is one of the office’s Field Training Officers.
• Law Enforcement – Deputy Gary Miller: Working for the office since 2007 and led the agency in criminal arrests in 2009, making 139 busts.
• Corrections – Officer Craig S. Hackett: Joined corrections in 1996 and is one of the office’s Field Training Officers and Instructors.
Recipients of the awards were selected by a committee consisting of the sheriff, the undersheriff, chief dispatcher, civil clerk and the lieutenants from patrol and corrections.
“The lieutenants get together with the sergeants and discuss their recommendations, and then the committee reviews an individual’s contribution and work record,” said Cutting.
