Purple Pride: Purple Tornado whips up school spirit

This week is dedicated to school spirit at Norwich High School, but it certainly isn’t the only time of the year when the school’s students show their Purple Pride. Anyone who has ever seen one of the high school’s numerous sports teams compete can attest to the fact that nothing whips up spirit like the Purple Tornado.

Home or away, the stands are typically filled to capacity with students eager to cheer on their brethren on the field, on the court or in the pool.

This year, that support is even carrying over into the hallways, thanks to the efforts of Athletic Director Steve Griffin.

“We wanted to spruce up the hallway,” Griffin said, referring to the long corridor by the high school gymnasium. The best way to accomplish that, he felt, was by tapping into all that Purple Pride.

The redecorating effort started with senior recognition, for which Griffin enlisted the help of students enrolled in photography. Then photos pulled from the athletic department’s own archive as well as that of Evening Sun photographer Frank Speziale (who has been photographing the school’s athletic contest for nearly half a century) were added. Newspaper clippings of recent Norwich athletic events are posted as well.
