Tractor stalls on hill, sends operator crashing backwards

OXFORD – An Oxford man was rushed to Wilson Regional Medical Center Thursday after the tractor he was operating along the roadway stalled and rolled backwards down a steep hill, crashing into a ditch.
The operator of the tractor, Randy Dungey, 21, of Oxford, was taken by ambulance to Wilson after suffering unknown back and neck injuries. Crews originally called for a helicopter to fly Dungey from the accident, but later canceled the request after arriving at the scene.
The accident occurred at around noon on State Street, just outside the Village of Oxford.
New York State Police said the tractor was attempting to turn off the roadway while heading up the steep hill when the driver suddenly lost control, causing the engine to stall and sending the vehicle rolling backwards. The tractor traveled in reverse for about 30 feet along the roadway until it veered into a ditch and nearly tipped over on the operator, pointing the engine straight into the air.
State troopers said no tickets were issued.
The Oxford Police and Fire Departments and the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office also responded to scene.
