Monday Evening Musical program focuses on historic Norwich
NORWICH – On Monday, April 5, at 7:30 p.m., the Monday Evening Musical Club will host Henry Drexler in a slide show, “Historical Musical Norwich.” Henry, besides being an artist of some fame in the area (he has a show, “Windmill Country,” running at the Gallery at the Council of the Arts through April 23), has a collection of hundreds of postcards from Norwich and Chenango County, which he has photographed onto slides. Many of these postcards date from the turn of the twentieth century, and depict a way of life that is now a distant memory. For instance, it was quite common at that time for each village and city to have its own opera house, as did Earlville, of course, but also Norwich and Oxford, among others.
Monday Evening Musical Club is celebrating its Centennial Year (the official founding date was October 4, 1909), so these postcards give a flavor of how Norwich and Chenango County looked and felt at that time. The public is invited to what will be a fascinating look at music as part of the history of Norwich. The presentation will take place at the United Church of Christ, 11 W. Main St., Norwich, at 7:30. Monday Evening Musical Club is a non-profit organization which awards scholarships to high school seniors who pursue a career in music. The concert is free and open to the public. A free will donation will be taken to benefit the Scholarship Fund.
